I make $50k a year now, and I incurred $50k in student loan debt along with another $50k in credit cards... I stopped paying my cards about 19 months ago, collection agencies call my mother, grandparents, and work.. Never my cell phone though, that is my only phone. I am wondering if I am risking having my wages garnished? I work for local government, I heard that Federal employees are less likely to have wages garnished , due to red-tape and admistrative expenses. Would this hold true for a County employee? I am not sure what method would be the best for me to clear up my debt. I want to buy a house before I am 30, I am currently 25. Any suggestions are welcomed, thanks!
Can my wages be garnished by Visa or other credit cards that I am not paying? I am in debt $100k, from colleg
Pay your debt - You got your education and it wasn%26#039;t the loan companies %26amp; credit cards responsibility to put you through college. It wasn%26#039;t a scholarship - it was LOANS. Now that you got your education you are making good money. Pay that debt off. it will take you years to do so - but do it. Be a person of good character.
Pay off as much of the credit card balances as you can and focus on the college loans as well. You will do it. I am serious in saying it will take you probably over 10 years to do so - but you CAN do it.
Negotiate with them on an amount you can realistically pay each month. DON%26#039;T go out and furnish your home and start living %26quot;high on the hog%26quot; just because you are out of college making some money now. You are an adult and should act like one. Pay the debt - it%26#039;s yours - and it%26#039;s only right.

If you want to buy a house, you can%26#039;t have bad credit. Each of the cards you did not pay are reporting you as R9 (charged off to a collection agancy) more than likely. A lender wants to see a good credit history. Keep that in mind. So start answering the phone, making payments and also start paying on the student loans that will never go away (read the law on that one). If the credit companies get a judgement on you, that will stay on your credit report for ten years, more if they renew the judgement. Just because you work somewhere that you are safe from wage garnishments does not make you untouchable. Assets can be seized...like a bank account. A county employee wages can be garnished I think only govt and Indian jobs, like for a reservation. A heads up on the student lonas. A loan for 8 thousand dollars can end up being a judgement for 23 thousand with interest, attorney fees adn all that. The loan was not a gift.
It is hard to pay off student loans when you begin at a salary you can barely live on, however they are not going ot go away, no one is going to forgive them unless you are considered totally unable to work, like had both your arms cut off and have one bad leg, blind in both eyes. You may need to get a night job....take care and good luck. You can get through it.

I am a collection attorney in California. A creditor cannot garnish your wages without first suing you and obtaining a judgment. Once they obtain a judgment, the wage garnishment procedure is not that difficult to initiate and your status as a County employee won%26#039;t help you.
You have quite a bit of debt and you won%26#039;t be able to purchase a home without better credit and/or a substantial downpayment. You might consider bankruptcy to get rid of the credit card debt and making payment arrangements for the student loan debt.
